Representatives of the Doctoral Students Council note that the advantage of the Doctoral School of Warsaw University of Life Sciences is the equal distribution of funds among doctoral students. The creation of a system of allocating additional funds to a limited number of people could initiate a “rat race”, which was offset by the establishment of Doctoral Schools with equal funding for all doctoral students (in the area of scholarships).
In addition, due to the fact that the amount of available resources varies greatly over time, it is difficult to plan their distribution and use.
As representatives of the Council of Doctoral Students of WULS-SGGW, we propose to use the available funds at the disposal of the Director of the Doctoral School of WULS-SGGW for the benefit of all doctoral students. Such a solution will not generate competition for additional funds. If possible, the remaining funds could be used, for example, for vouchers to PWN for books, organization of training courses with certificates useful for everyone (first aid, data processing, writing articles, graphical presentation of results, ways to deal with stress, how to rest effectively, proper time management, etc.). Another idea is to publish a monograph from WULS-SGGW after conferences organized by the WULS-SGGW Doctoral School, eg “Cztery Żywioły”. These funds could also be used to spread higher culture through tickets to the theater / opera / cinema etc.
In general, we propose that the funds that the Director of the Doctoral School of WULS-SGGW would like and could use for motivating doctoral students should be allocated to all doctoral students, so that competition for them will not arise. We believe that, even within disciplines, the diversity of scientific possibilities is so large that the development of any criteria is very difficult and would always generate a sense of injustice.
However, if the available funds could not be used for activities for all doctoral students, we suggest that the annual evaluation criteria should be followed when applying for an incentive scholarship. We do not propose a division into groups characterizing scientific possibilities, because even within one discipline, the possibilities of publication are very different. We suggest that such an application should include a column in which the doctoral student would have to clearly describe the nature of his / her research and thus have the possibility for the committee examining the applications to properly assess the doctoral student’s achievements.
