Marta Mendel<\/strong> was born on 29 October 1979 in Warsaw.<\/p>

Dr. hab. Marta Mendel, Prof. SGGW, completed her veterinary studies at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) in 2005, earning the title of professional veterinarian. During her studies, she spent a year (2003-2004) at the University of Veterinary Medicine (Tier\u00e4rztliche Hochschule) in Hannover, Germany. In 2005, she embarked on her doctoral studies at the same institution, culminating in 2010 with a Doctor of Veterinary Sciences degree. Her dissertation focused on the effects of selected active compounds of common ivy (Hedera helix<\/em>) on the motoric activity of isolated stomach strips in rats. She further advanced her academic career by obtaining a postdoctoral degree in 2018 in the discipline of veterinary medicine, specializing in pharmacology and toxicology.<\/p>

Since 2008, Dr. Mendel has been a valued member of SGGW, where she currently serves as an associate professor. Throughout her tenure, she has held several significant roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2019-2020), Scientific Supervisor of the Pharmacology-Toxicology Section of the Veterinary Medicine Scientific Circle (since 2017), and Year Supervisor (2014-2020). In addition, since 2015, she has been an expert for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, assessing plant protection products in mammalian toxicology. She also coordinates the GA networking group on Medicinal Plants and Natural Products in Animal Healthcare and Veterinary Medicine since 2017.<\/p>

Dr. Mendel\u2019s scientific interests are centered on the pharmacological actions of medicinal plants and plant-derived active substances. Her research extensively employs alternative methods, including in vitro<\/em> and ex vivo<\/em> experimental models, to study the effects of xenobiotics on gastrointestinal and liver functions. Another key area of her research is evaluating the toxic effects of mycotoxins. She has enriched her research experience through short-term placements at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin (2017) and the TOXALIM Research Centre in Food Toxicology at INRA – Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in Toulouse (2019).<\/p>

As a principal investigator or major collaborator, Dr. Mendel has contributed to numerous scientific research projects funded by various European, national, and institutional sources, including the European Union, NSC, NCN, MNiSzW, KNOW, and SGGW. She is the author of several dozen scientific publications.<\/p>

Dr. Mendel is actively engaged in the broader scientific community. She is a member of the Committee of Veterinary Sciences and Reproductive Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the 2024-2028 term, the Polish Society of Toxicology (serving as president of the Warsaw branch since 2021), the Polish Society of Veterinary Sciences (since 2019), and the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (since 2009). Additionally, she has served on the Anti-Doping Subcommittee of the Veterinary Committee of the Polish Equestrian Federation (2013-2019). Since 2020, she has been an expert for the Polish Accreditation Commission in the veterinary discipline and, since 2023, an expert for the Institutional Evaluation Programme accreditation under the European University Association. In 2021, she joined the executive committee of ICA-Edu.<\/p>

Dr. Mendel’s contributions to science and organizational leadership have been recognized with awards from the Rector of SGGW, the Polish Society of Veterinary Sciences, and the Nor-Feed Veterinary Award consortium.<\/p>

She is proficient in English, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Her personal interests include travel, Ibero-American culture, promoting science among children, and windsurfing.
