Students will work in international teams on civil and environmental engineering problems related to the use of construction and demolition (C&amp;D) and industrial solid waste (ISW) materials.<\/p>\n<p>The course covers environmental impacts, ecotoxicity, remediation potential, geotechnical design, and laboratory and in situ testing methods. It consists of a&nbsp;three-week virtual component (25 contact hours plus 15 hours of individual work) delivered via MS Teams, Miro, Padlet, and Mentimeter, followed by an intensive laboratory session held from June 18\u201324, and a&nbsp;post-laboratory virtual session.<\/p>\n<p>The course introduces principles of circular economy, green chemistry, sustainability, and nanosafety, with a&nbsp;strong focus on bio-based and biodegradable nanomaterials.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in green synthesis and functionalization of nanomaterials, physicochemical characterization techniques, nanoparticle\u2013cell interactions, and in vitro nanosafety assessment. <strong>20\u201324 April 2026<\/strong>, following an online preparatory week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf0d <strong>Participating universities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme brought together <strong>29 students from six European partner universities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>Haute \u00c9cole de la Romania<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Slovak University of Technology, Slovakia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83d\udd2c <strong>Hands-on learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme combined online learning with practical laboratory work, project activities and international teamwork. Participants explored the use of construction and demolition waste and industrial solid waste in civil and environmental engineering, including environmental impacts, remediation potential, geotechnical applications and laboratory testing.<br \/>Students worked in international teams, carried out laboratory experiments, analysed results and prepared technical reports. As part of the programme, they also participated in <strong>Civil Engineering Days<\/strong> and the <strong>\u201cBuilding the Tower\u201d competition<\/strong>, as well as guest lectures delivered by academics from Portugal and Romania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u2b50 <strong>Participant feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The BIP received <strong>very positive feedback from participants<\/strong>. The survey was completed by <strong>28 of the 29 students<\/strong>, representing a&nbsp;<strong>97% response rate<\/strong>. Students gave the programme an overall score of <strong>4.75\/5<\/strong><br \/>Particularly high ratings were given to the <strong>on-site activities, facilities and learning environment, organisation and support, and the balance between training and free time<\/strong>. Students combined lectures, workshops, case studies and discussions with practical field activities.<br \/>During the on-site component, participants visited <strong>Rog\u00f3w, Brzeziny and Spa\u0142a<\/strong>, where they observed forest ecosystems and explored challenges related to alien species together with local forestry professionals. Students also took part in practical activities, including the <strong>removal of unwanted tree species from forest plantations<\/strong>, gaining first-hand experience of forest management practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83e\udd1d <strong>International cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Working in an international environment allowed students and academic staff to exchange knowledge and teaching experience. Students first explored the theoretical foundations and key challenges related to nanomaterials and then followed the research process through practical laboratory activities.<br \/>Participants performed or observed techniques including <strong>SEM and TEM microscopy, NTA, DLS and zeta potential analysis<\/strong>, as well as the evaluation of biocompatibility using human and bacterial cell models. This practical approach allowed students to connect material preparation and physicochemical properties with biological effects.<br \/>Students also took part in <strong>scientific discussions, group work and final presentations<\/strong>, developing their ability to analyse results, formulate conclusions and communicate scientific findings in an international team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u2b50 <strong>Participant feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The BIP received <strong>excellent feedback from participants<\/strong>. The evaluation survey recorded an overall programme rating of <strong>4.63\/5<\/strong>, and <strong>all respondents stated that they would recommend the BIP to other students<\/strong>.<br \/>Particularly high ratings were given to the <strong>laboratory facilities and teaching spaces <\/strong>, overall organisation , on-site academic activities\u00a0 and support from the host institution .<br \/>Participants identified <strong>practical and laboratory work, academic content, additional activities, international experience and networking with other students<\/strong> among the most valuable elements of the programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf93 <strong>What participants gained<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Participants strengthened their knowledge and practical skills in <strong>green nanobiotechnology<\/strong>, including nanomaterial synthesis, characterisation and biological evaluation. The programme combined a&nbsp;virtual component with an intensive on-site week, bringing together students and academic staff from European partner universities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf0d <strong>Participating universities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme involved students and teachers from four European institutions:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>University of Ljubljana, Slovenia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Lithuania<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf4e <strong>Hands-on learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme combined lectures, workshops and project-based learning with practical activities related to <strong>gluten-free nutrition, sustainable meal planning and health benefits of a&nbsp;balanced diet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Students worked in four international teams on practical projects. They developed meal-planning principles based on the <strong>Planetary Health Diet<\/strong>, prepared case studies, designed innovative gluten-free muffin recipes, evaluated their nutritional value and environmental impact, including carbon footprint, and carried out sensory assessments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An additional component was a&nbsp;meeting with a&nbsp;representative of the <strong>Polish Coeliac Society and People on a&nbsp;Gluten-Free Diet<\/strong>, which gave participants insight into the everyday challenges faced by people following a&nbsp;gluten-free diet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The programme resulted in <strong>four project presentations and four scientific and educational posters<\/strong>, presenting recipes, nutritional information, environmental aspects and potential health benefits of the developed products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u2b50 <strong>Participant feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The BIP received <strong>very positive feedback from participants<\/strong>. The survey had an <strong>82% response rate<\/strong>, with 14 responses. Students gave the programme an overall score of <strong>4.29\/5.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The highest ratings were given to the <strong>on-site component, facilities and learning environment , and organisation and support<\/strong>. <strong>13 of the 14 respondents stated that they would recommend the BIP to other students<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf93 <strong>What participants gained<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Participants expanded their knowledge of <strong>gluten-free nutrition, sustainable meal planning, nutritional assessment and the environmental impact of food choices<\/strong>. They also developed skills in scientific literature analysis, project work, sensory evaluation and presentation of results in English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Working in international teams further strengthened their <strong>communication, teamwork, intercultural and organisational skills<\/strong>, providing valuable experience relevant to future professional work in nutrition, dietetics and health-related fields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\ud83c\udf31 <strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The results of the BIP were disseminated through <strong>student presentations, scientific and educational posters, teaching materials and a&nbsp;final discussion involving students and academic staff<\/strong>. The materials developed during the programme can be used in future BIP editions and in teaching related to dietetics, human nutrition and nutrition education.<\/p>\n<p>The programme also strengthened cooperation between SGGW and its European partners and created a&nbsp;strong basis for <strong>future joint educational and research initiatives<\/strong> focusing on sustainable nutrition and
