This year the World Water Day is focused on groundwater. Regarding water, it is important to take into consideration the scale of the catchment area of a given lake, river or even the sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The latest results of the research conducted by the team from the Department of Hydrology, Meteorology and Water Management (<\/span>Marta Stachowicz<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Mateusz Grygoruk<\/span><\/a>),<\/span> and published in the <\/span>Science of the Total Environment<\/span><\/i> journal show the importance of groundwater retention in the process of restoring dry mire in order to increase the water resources of the transboundary catchment area of the Neman River.<\/span><\/p>

The restoration of wetlands can bring up to 118 million m3 of water retention, the value of which can reach up to EUR 60 million a year! It has also been proved that the profits from water retention are higher than the costs of wetland restoration activities. Marsh and groundwater are worth investing in! Happy Water Day!<\/span><\/p>
