On 8 October 2026, the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) officially opened its Innovative Nutrition Research Center. The new facility will serve researchers and students, providing opportunities to conduct research, develop innovative solutions, and deliver education in the fields of nutrition and health. The opening ceremony was held in conjunction with the inauguration of the 2026/2027 academic year at SGGW’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
New Opportunities for Research and Teaching
The Innovative Nutrition Research Center at SGGW is a research and teaching facility designed to provide the infrastructure necessary for the development of the Faculty of Health Sciences. It will support scientific research, implementation projects, and education in human nutrition and health sciences. Its mission is to foster collaboration between academia and practical applications, while developing solutions that address societal needs related to health, nutritional quality, and quality of life.
The Center reflects a holistic approach to health that considers not only nutrition, but also lifestyle, disease prevention, health education, and well-being. It is intended to support the advancement of research and teaching, as well as cooperation between the academic community, public institutions, and socio-economic partners.
During the ceremony, speakers recalled that the establishment of the Center was the result of many years of work. The project dates back to 2018, when an agreement was signed with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. As highlighted in the speeches, the investment was completed despite numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Official Opening and Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
The official proceedings began with the ceremonial opening of SGGW’s Innovative Nutrition Research Center, culminating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event preceded the inauguration of the academic year at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The subsequent programme included addresses by university representatives and government officials, followed by an inaugural lecture on health delivered by Professor Krystyna Gutkowska, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The distinguished guests included Dr Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education, accompanied by representatives of the Ministry; Professor Michał Zasada, Rector of SGGW; Dr habil. Marta Mendel, Professor at SGGW and Vice-Rector for Internationalisation; Professor Marcin Gołębiewski, Vice-Rector for Development; Professor Jarosław Gołębiewski, Vice-Rector for Education; Professor Wiesław Bielawski, former Rector of SGGW; Dr Arkadiusz Gruchała, Chancellor of SGGW; and Dr Władysław Skarżyński, Rector’s Representative and former Chancellor of SGGW.

The ceremony also brought together rectors and representatives of Polish and international universities, research institutes, academic staff, students of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and representatives of business organisations and companies involved in food production and distribution.
The Significance of the Innovative Nutrition Research Center
During the ceremony, addresses were delivered by Professor Krystyna Gutkowska, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Dr Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education. Both speakers emphasised the importance of the investment for the advancement of health sciences, the education of future specialists, and the practical application of research findings.
Professor Krystyna Gutkowska highlighted the importance of the new infrastructure for the development of the Faculty of Health Sciences and for continuing SGGW’s longstanding tradition in the field of human nutrition. Professor Michał Zasada, Rector of SGGW, emphasised that the opening of the Innovative Nutrition Research Center marked a stronger focus on health within the University’s activities. He noted that health sciences would be one of the key areas of the University’s future development.
We are talking about nutritional sciences and about what underpins our health and well-being. Yet we are also at a particularly significant point, because for the first time at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, health will no longer be treated merely as a background consideration motivating or contextualising our activities. Instead, health and health sciences will become a clearly defined and central component of our work in the years ahead. – Professor Michał Zasada, Rector of SGGW
Dr Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education, congratulated the University community on the opening of the Center and emphasised the broader societal significance of the investment. He pointed out that the new facilities would support not only academic development, but also efforts to address challenges related to health and nutritional quality.
The Center being opened today is also intended to help solve real societal problems, promote health, improve nutritional quality, and respond to the challenges facing our society. – said Dr Marcin Kulasek.
Bridging Research and Practice
Cooperation between the University and its socio-economic partners was one of the key themes of the ceremony. The presence of representatives from the food industry, research institutions, and the medical community underscored the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to human health and nutrition.
As Professor Krystyna Gutkowska and Professor Michał Zasada noted, health depends not only on access to medical treatment, but also on everyday choices, including dietary habits and physical activity. Advancing research in these areas and translating its findings into practical solutions will be among the important priorities of the University’s activities.
The opening of the Innovative Nutrition Research Center marks another milestone in the development of SGGW and its Faculty of Health Sciences. The new facility is intended to provide students and researchers with an environment conducive to conducting research, acquiring knowledge, and developing collaborative partnerships whose outcomes can contribute to improving public health and quality of life.
