Water in the reconstructed marsh is worth up to 60 million euros a year

This year the World Water Day is focused on groundwater. Regarding water, it is important to take into consideration the scale of the catchment area of a given lake, river or even the sea. 

The latest results of the research conducted by the team from the Department of Hydrology, Meteorology and Water Management (Marta Stachowicz, Mateusz Grygoruk), and published in the Science of the Total Environment journal show the importance of groundwater retention in the process of restoring dry mire in order to increase the water resources of the transboundary catchment area of the Neman River.

The restoration of wetlands can bring up to 118 million m3 of water retention, the value of which can reach up to EUR 60 million a year! It has also been proved that the profits from water retention are higher than the costs of wetland restoration activities. Marsh and groundwater are worth investing in! Happy Water Day!
